Addressed to Chargé d'Affaires telegram No. 1 of January

A party of 80 Japanese soldiers marching down Hankow

road at 11.30 today were bombed by two Chinese who escaped in a northerly direction. Japanese military picketed immediate

vicinity and conducted their own investigation. I walked to

the spot after 3 p.m. and happened to see their withdrawal which they did quietly. Assistant Superintendent of Police

informed me that their attitude had been quite restrained

and that seeing that Shanghai Municipal Police were present in considerable numbers they had not placed cordon round the

area.

I am informed also that bombs were thrown on three

occasions this morning against Japanese mills in Italian

sector.
